    1 / 2
1864/71: 1 d. carmine-vermilion, single example with a few perf. imperfections, used on 1866 Soldier's concessionary rate cover with complete contents (written from Camp Opanako on July 22), mailed from New Plymouth to Nailsworth, Gloucester tied by numeral "9" obliterator with NEW PLYMOUTH despatch cds (July 30) alongside. Endorsed at top 'From No. 658, Private James Penley, 50th Regiment' and counter-signed correctly at lower left by Captain R.H.P Doran commanding. Reverse with 'Stroud' arrival cds (Oct 21) in black. Cert. BPA (1991), RPSL (2006), sold together with an extraordinary 1866 cover, addressed to James Penley (but without stating his rank of Private) franked correctly with Great Britain 1858/798 1 d. red, pl. 92 tied by Stroud duplex with extremely rare instructional "RANK / NOT STATED" in red and "RETURNED FOR POSTAGE / THE AMOUNT / "5d." / DEFICIENT" in red with London cds (May 24) alongside (6 d. would have been the Officer's rate). Cert. BPA (1991). Private Penley's letter states, like others from both the Queen's Own and the West Middlesex regiments, that he was intending to stay on in New Zealand. An extraordinary pair of covers from the 2nd. Maori War - this being one of only two known Soldier's letters from the 50th Regiment in the Hauhau Campaign.rnNote: A fascinating monograph on the 50th Regiment's activities in New Zealand, by Gerald Ellott, published in August 2017, will be available in Zurich at the auction viewing. The monograph illustrates the other known cover from the 50th Regiment sent at the concessionary rate.rnrnProvenance: Collection Gerald Sattin, Spink, 5 May 2004, lot 129.
