Lot# : 743 Ionian Islands
Ionian Islands 1859: (½ d.) orange, no wmk., an unused block of twenty-five (5 x 5) from the sheet of 120 subjects, ample to large margins all round, third stamp with tiny scuff mark on tiara, otherwise superb and very fresh, large part og. with the majority unmounted og. A delightful and extremely scarce multiple Gi = £ 3'500+.rnrnNote: There were 50'000 examples printed of each value. The reason that the ½ d. value is very much the scarcest is said to be that William Lincoln, the first stamp dealer to open a shop in London, circa 1856, later utilised the ½ d. value in sheets as decorative wall-paper for his London office when he moved from his original shop in Holborn to Holles Street, Oxford Circus, London.Starting bid : 750 CHFHammer price : 2,200 CHF
