    1877 (Aug 31): New printings on rose paper, 6 d. blue on rose, imperforate, optd. Type 4 upright, a fine used example, right pane position 2, on 1877 combination cover from Linokana, Marico District to London and tied by circular numeral "31" in black with MARICO / Z.A.R. / ZUID AFRIKA datestamp at left (Dec 18) of despatch. Cape of Good Hope 1865/76 1 d. carmine, single and strip of five applied above and tied by 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' cds's (Dec 28) in black. Carried on 'Warwick Castle' with London arrival cds (Jan 25, 1878) on front in red. Cover #32 in the Jorgensen census. Some trivial staining on one or two Cape adhesives not detracting from the appearance of a charming and extremely rare cover - the earliest recorded usage of the numeral "31" on cover.rnrnProvenance: Collection Dr. Alan Drysdall, Spink, London, 1 March 2006, lot 1230.rn
