    1877: Essay for Tender by De La Rue, 1 d. value hand-painted in deep bright green and Chinese white on thick card, headed TRANSVAAL POSTAGE at top and large ONE PENNY in frame below, the vignette with embossed 'Cameo' head-plate, handstamped '10 OCT 77' at top in black. Endorsed in manuscript on reverse 'A.M.D. No. 5' in ink. A superb and wonderful Essay, following the requirement "the cheapest possible process such as lithography or any similar kind of printing such as Gambia".  Whilst this appears to have been followed to the letter, the tender was turned down in favour of Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.  See "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6350 for the other example of this unique Essay.rnrnProvenance: Ritchie Bodily, May 1951.rn                   Collection Major Harold Criddle, RL, London, 23 Feb 1992, lot 310.
