'Mafeking Besieged' on Stamps of the Bechuanaland Protectorate 1900 (March 28): Surcharged 1 d. on ½ d. vermilion, a used vertical tête-bêche pair on small piece, upper stamp normal (Type 4), lower stamp with variety "Surcharge Inverted" (Type 3), tied by part MAFEKING / C.G.H. datestamps (March) in black: probably the 31st March adjoining the pair in the Royal collection. An extraordinarily rare variety, with just four tête-bêche pairs recorded: this pair, a block of four (ex Maria de La Queillerie) and a pair in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
