    1840: 1 d. black, a defective example used on 1840 cover front to Madeira endorsed 'by First Packet via London', tied by red Maltese Cross with 'Wolverhampton' despatch cds (Dec 15) in red at left. Prepaid 1/10d. in manuscript with confirming London tombstone datestamp (Dec 16) in red and manuscript '160' (reis) due upon delivery. Despite faults, a rare item with just three 1 d. black covers known to Madeira, all three with the adhesives somewhat faulty.
