Lot# 3680 - Auction 227-233

  • Lot# : 3680 Western Australia

    1 / 1
1858 (Feb 26): 2 d. brown-black on red, used with 1854 1 d. black and 1855 1 s. pale brown, margins good to somewhat touched, on 1860 cover to St. John's, New Brunswick, initially endorsed 'via Southampton' but altered to 'via Marseilles', the adhesives all tied by "6" numeral obliterators with corresponding 'ALBANY / WESTERN AUSTRALIA' despatch cds at lower left (Jan 24) in black. The cover with the original 1 s. franking raised by the addition of the 1 d. and the 2 d. adhesives (and annotated as such in red at left "3d." in red ink). 'Paid / London' transit cds on front (March 6) with '1' (penny) credit in manuscript; reverse with 'St. John's / NB' cds of receipt (March 26) in black. The address panel with minor closed tear at base, file fold below the adhesives and some slight repairs to the top and the corners of the envelope, otherwise a truly marvellous three colour franking to a most exotic destination for Australian Colonial Mail. An Exhibition item of the highest calibre. Cert. BPA (1985).rnrnNote: There are just two covers known to New Brunswick in the classic period, this and the one in the Vestey sale. Both were originally offered in a 'Rarities of the World' sale by Harmer Rooke (SG), London, 21-22 May 1964, lot 611 and lot 612, the latter being offered here.rnrn
