  • Lot# : 3437 Victoria

1857/60: Emblems Issue, (4 d.) Tender Essay by S. Calvert with Victoria's head surrounded by two octagonal frames in white, probably modelled on the Great Britain 1847/54 embossed issue, with VICTORIA at top with stars at each side, printed in pale brownish-pink on white, affixed to small piece of wove paper (35 x 36 mm.). Similar but finer than the example in the first Purves sale (lot 2080), the Purves example was annotated 'Design for the Fourpenny Stamp other colour not embossed. Calvert Brothers'. Calvert, the printer of the Woodblock issue, was to win the contract for the 1857/60 adhesives, see 'Stamps of Victoria' by Geoff Kellow RDP, page107. An extremely rare and most attractive Essay.
