    1854 (Feb): Garter 1 s. pale red, imperforate, two fine horizontal pairs with large margins all round, one pair with one stamp imperceptibly touched at top, used on 1857 cover endorsed 'Via Marseilles, per Mail Steamer Columbian' to London tied by Sydney mute obliterators in black. Reverse with 'Sydney / New South Wales' datestamp of despatch (July 17) in black. Central strike of London 'Paid' cds in red of arrival on front (Sept 19). A wonderful usage, carried at eight times the single rate, the 4 shilling franking being correct for a letter of between 1¾ and 2 ounces in weight.
