  • Lot# : 29 France

Peninsular War 1808 (Sept 24): Entire letter to Bordeaux written by Sgt. Major de Keyser of the 119th Regiment in bivouac at Brisalina, 20 leagues from Vitoria, Spain struck on front with three line 'BAU. GAL. CORPS / D'OBSERV. DES PYRENEES / OCCIDENTALES' in black (Reinhardt = 1'000 pts). A fine strike of this scarce marking, the letter describes the Battle of Medina del Rio Seco at which 22'000 Spaniards, parts of the Armies of Galicia (under Blake) and Castile (under Cuesta) were defeated by 14'000 French troops under Marshall Bessières. The battle secured the lines of communication between Madrid and Bayonne.
