    1453 (Dec 20): Delightful early entire letter mailed from Damascus to Pera, Constantinople; clearly dated with part string still attached to the seal after 500 years! It is interesting to note that Constantinople fell to the Turks barely seven months earlier and it appears that trade remained un-interrupted.

    1463 (July 24): Astonishingly early entire letter from Constantinople to Venice, replete with string attached on flap, disinfected by toasting probably on arrival from the East. No arrival date is mentioned but the journey at this date took nearly four months.
    Note: The Ottoman Turks had largely overrun the Eastern Byzantine Empire and expelled the Seljuk Turks by 1460. They encouraged foreign merchants to settle and continue trading with the West from their enclaves in Galata, Pera and the Black Sea area.

A marvellous pair showing dates at top of each by seal, sent during the month and year Colombus first landed in the Americas.

    1728 (Feb 25): Entire letter from Constantinople to Venice via Belgrade and Vienna with manuscript Forwarding Agent on flap 'Fratelli Palm, Vienna 24 Marzo 1728'; and full intact wax seal SIGILLUM SANITATIS where opened for disinfection at Parakhin (believed to be the sole known intact example). Charged 8 kreuzers on arrival in manuscript. A very rare cover.
    Note:The Palm Brothers were later to fall from favour for defrauding the Post Office.

Opened and disinfected at Semlin with part wax seal on flap. Thence via Ostend to London (Dec 31) and charged 1 shilling to recipient. Fine and scarce entire.

    1789 (Aug 15): Entire letter mailed during the short period of the French Ambassador's Post-1788 to 1789-as the Austrian Office was closed in 1788 due to the outbreak of War with Turkey; an entire prepaid to London via Marseilles with handstruck P. PAYE and VOIE DE MER / PAR MARSEILLE in black, and both disinfected at Marseille with chisel slits and forwarded there by 'J.W.' on flap. Charged '25' décimes at the Embassy on despatch and a further '10' décimes, probably marked in Paris. London arrival (Nov 9) on flap. A rare surviving cover from this experiment curtailed due to the Revolution in France.

Reverse with Venice arrival cds (Aug 21). A charming and particularly fine example of a mixed franking from this small correspondence.
    Note:The joint Turkish-Austrian courier service between Scutari and Antivari began in circa 1868. Letters could be handed in at either the Turkish Post office or the Austrian Consulate in Scutari. Both countries adhesives were affixed but the Austrian adhesives were cancelled only on arrival in Antivari.

'Zante' hooded datestamp alongside (Nov 8) in blue with manuscript '4½ + Patrasso 5 = 9½' in red ink on arrival, with further charge of '1½' (pence) marked for the journey from Zante to Cefalonia. Reverse with the three transit datestamps mentioned above and Cefalonia hooded arrival (Nov 10). Illustrated in Tchilinghirian, Vol. 5 page 368. A splendid entire and a major rarity of Aegean Islands Postal History.

DIC datestamp in black, with arrival on reverse (Jan 10, 1865). The blue ink was apparently used for letters carried loose, the black for pouched or bagged mail. A scarce and interesting pair.

F1/F11), attractive 1908 cover to Hannover with four adhesives tied BEIRUT / ÖSTERR. POST cds's (fig. L) and an early letter from Aleppo to Venice with docketing '22' piastres ship fee. A fine lot.

    1875 (Aug 21): Cover from Burgas to Genoa sent unpaid, struck with superb BURGAS cds in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 936) and struck with the newly introduced 'T' marking as Austria had joined the UPU upon inception in July 1875; sent via Constantinople (Aug 23), Varna (Aug 25) and Vienna (Aug 28). On arrival pair of 1870 40 c. Postage Dues, crossed by file fold, applied and tied by Genova cds (Aug 31). Some small tears on reverse but a rare cover.
