1789 (Aug 15): Entire letter mailed during the short period of the French Ambassador's Post-1788 to 1789-as the Austrian Office was closed in 1788 due to the outbreak of War with Turkey; an entire prepaid to London via Marseilles with handstruck P. PAYE and VOIE DE MER / PAR MARSEILLE in black, and both disinfected at Marseille with chisel slits and forwarded there by 'J.W.' on flap. Charged '25' décimes at the Embassy on despatch and a further '10' décimes, probably marked in Paris. London arrival (Nov 9) on flap.
