The addressee had moved to Paris and thus the entire was charged '16' décimes due on delivery as the letter was considered as a double rate unpaid letter on arrival. E. O. 1861: Washington 10 c. yellow-green, used on cover from Washington to Guatemala, dated 19 March 1862, tied by Washington DC circular datestamp in black dated 20 March, with charge mark "2" in blue alongside. The envelope is addressed to "Hon. E. D. Crosby" (Elisha Oscar Crosby) and contains an extensive letter, headed up "Washington March 19th, 1862", contains interesting historical content relating to President Abraham Lincoln; ".....Mr. Lincoln will get the nomination at the Republican Convention which assembles in Blatimore in June or I will confess that I am politically blind. 13 State Legislators have already passed resolutions favouring his re-election and think they express the voice of the people, and if nominated his election is a certainty, beyond all question. Which is more than can be said for any other aspirant...."; the two page handwritten letter is signed; 'Sam' N. Hilton'; a wonderful snapshot into US politics during the American Civil War period. Christa McAuliffe on airmail envelope franked with vert. pair of 'Health Research' 20c. tied by KSC machine cancel (Jan. 28 AM), bearing special cancels 'First Shuttle /"Pad B" Launch' in black and '25th Space / Shuttle Launch / Mission 51-L' in violett alongside. Very Fine. McAuliffe was chosen among 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space and had been scheduled to conduct two classes while in space. Greg Jarvis signature was added later, by someones other hand just to be ment to complete the crew signatures, as Jarvis was a late addition to the flight. Carried on Inman Line Steamer "City of Brussels" with poor London transit cds on reverse in red and struck there with "GB / 40c." accountancy mark applied in black. An over-payment of the double 2 x 4 c. US rate. Charged at French triple rate with '15' décimes due marking in black on arrival (Aug 31). Slight imperfections to reverse with top flap missing but a rare usage of this short-lived fancy cancellation. Postal Services in the 1946 Atomic Tests Exhibit Collection, expansive collection documenting the postal history of Operation Crossroads, which consisted of a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted in mid-1946, replete with better items including Joint Task Force 1 cachets, hand-drawn cartoon by Grant Powers (official artist for Operation Crossroads), earliest and latest recorded dates of Branch Number 13746, several covers from Kwajalein Base, November 1946 cover with typed "Joint Crossroads Committee" return address, one of 30 covers flown on the F-13 with Major George Birdsong on Test Baker Day, official card of participation and dog tag from a member of Landing Craft Infantry USS LCI 1067, inbound cover to doctor on the U.S.S. Panamint, April 1946 cover celebrating the broadcast of Jack Benny's Radio Show from the U.S.S. 1924 (Dec.): Aviation School air post proof collection including 23 die and plate proofs of the vignette and frame with dies in various states of completion as produced by the Perkins, Bacon & Co. of London, starting with two combination proofs of center vignette with both planes that were used in this series, includes a finished combination proof, another with one finished plus individual proofs of each, the frame dies include proofs from the beginning as it was just starting to be developed, includes various without value plus all completed frames for the seven values in the issued colors, also several die proofs with the vignette inserted in various states of the frame, mostly of the 10c value including two with the vignette not used on that value, also a very few plate proofs including a block of nine of the 5B value in green and black, fine-very fine and a wonderful production study of this popular first air mail series. Junkers' First Flight Cochabamba to Oruro 1925 (Aug. 11): 'Correo Aereo / a Oruro / 11-8-1925' ovpt. in green on 50 c. orange on semi official air post stamps, two examples used on double rated envelope tied by oval 'Correos de Bolivia / Cochabamba / 10 AGO 1925' handstamp in black with adjacent blue green c.d.s. of that post office at bottom left and Oruro receiving c.d.s. of August 11th at top left. One stamp exceptionally well centered, the other slightly centered to the bottom right, has two "25" from the "1925" caused by one overprint being displaced. Very fine cover with all markings on the front; the Junkers F13 flight to Ouro had a few more covers carried than to Sucre and more have survived, but like the previous cover, double rate covers with two of the air post overprints are extremely rare and this cover is one of only two or three covers known to date.
