Stamp Duty Series 1884/96: Lithographed 10 s. brown on rose, wmk. first V over Crown sideways, variety perf. 12½ x 12, an unused example, superbly well centred for the issue, lightest of blue marks at top mentioned for full accuracy and not mentioned on the certificate, of excellent fresh colour, fine large part og. 1859: Octagonal 1 s. blue, perf. 12, a fine used strip of five on 1860 cover front from Hepburn to Brione Vergasca, Ticino, Switzerland paying the ¾ ounce registered rate, tied by numeral obliterators in black with "Registered / Melbourne" cds (April 13) in red at base; London transit (June 18) in red and French CHARGÉ in black. Recorded in the Ben Palmer census (No. 114) on page 166. 1863/1880, Laureated, 6 d. blue, perf. 13, used, variety 'watermark sideways facing right', cancelled by part datestamp in black, positioned left, fine example, rare, unpriced; two examples recorded, one being defective. Cert. RPSV (2008). rnRemarks: The "Philatey from Australia" first reported this error in March 1952. The certification of this stamp led to its listing in the 2010 Stanley Gibbons catalogue. 1873/87: Bell Essay for the 1 d. value on card (56 x 51 mm.), with printed central vignette of Queens's head and hand-painted surround all in shades of rose-red, signed at right 'RR' in manuscript ink (Robert Ramsay, Postmaster General of Victoria); this being the accepted design. 1873/1887, Bell, 1 s. indigo-blue on blue, perf. 13, variety 'watermark sideways', cancelled by a crisp black "156" barred numeral, fine, scarce error; no more than a dozen known. Gi = £750.rnRemarks: The 'Australian Philatelic Record' first reported this error in July 1929 and it was listed in the Stanley Gibbons in 2005. 1879: Essay for Stamp Statute 3 d. design, entirely hand-painted on card (80 x 102 mm.) in orange on background of Chinese white with perforation surround in pencil. very close to the issued design although issued in mauve. Signed off at lower right and dated "29.7.79" in ink. Illustrated and discussed in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on page 215.
