    Spanish Colonial Period 1800 (Oct 8): Entire letter from Malaga to Montevideo, Uruguay addressed to one Don. Benito Calzada, struck on despatch with two line "MALAGA / ANDA. BAXA." in red (Guinovart & Tizon #4) and watery but complete strike of "ESPAÑA" handstamp in red applied in La Coruña. Two vertical disinfection slits, no docketing of receipt but a fresh and fine entire.     1852 (Nov 8): Entire letter probably from Rio de Janeiro via Montevideo to Buenos Ayres endorsed "per Condesa" in manuscript, struck with superb strike of oval framed "MONTEVIDEO / 8 NOV / (52)" handstamp in black and charged '10' centavos to pay upon receipt. Less than fifteen covers have been recorded with this datestamp: only used in 1852 on incoming foreign mail. A fine and rare cover. Cert. C.H.     Brazilian Province of Uruguay "Cisplatina Province" 1826 (June 2): Large part cover from Montevideo to London endorsed "p. H.B.M. packet Lord Hobart" struck on despatch with straight line "MONTV.O" despatch handstamp in red (just four recorded), and struck on arrival with italic manuscript filled "4 Oz. at 14/s. per Oz" handstamp in black with the requisite charge "£ 2.16s." alongside in manuscript to pay upon receipt. London Foreign Post Office arrival on reverse (Aug 18) in black. An exceptional cover - the Brazilian fleet was blockading the River Plate whilst this letter was in transit and thereafter Falmouth Packets called at Rio de Janeiro. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 100. Rare and most attractive, an extraordinarily high rate to pay upon arrival, just four recorded outgoing covers are known mailed during the Brazilian occupation of Uruguay.     Falmouth Packets 1845 (July 2): Entire letter written on board the "HMS Eagle" off Montevideo to West Wittering, Chichester, carried by "HMS Spider" to Rio and thence on the "HMS Peterel" and struck on arrival in Falmouth with superb circular "BUENOS AYRES / O" handstamp in red. Reverse with London transit cds and Chichester arrival cds (Sept 26) in black, rated at '2/7d.' to pay in manuscript (2/5 d. for the Maritime voyage + 1 d. internal charge to Bath + 1 d. Captain's gratuity). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 101. A lovely entire.rnNote: The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata was a five-year-long naval blockade imposed by France and Britain on the Argentine Confederation ruled by Juan Manuel de Rosas. It was imposed in 1845 to support the Colorado Party in the Uruguayan Civil War and closed Buenos Aires to naval commerce.

    Falmouth Packets 1838 (Jan 23): Entire letter written during the first French Blockade of the River Plate, sent from Montevideo to London and endorsed "p. Packet". Struck on despatch with fine straight line "MONTVO." handstamp in red. Carried on the "HMS Cockatrice" to Rio and thence on the "HMS Reindeer" to Falmouth at quadruple rate. Reverse with "London" double arc arrival (May 15) in black and charged "10/3d." due in manuscript. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 102.

    Falmouth Packets 1845 (Sept 10): Entire letter, with extraordinary script inside, mailed from blockaded Montevideo to Blaye, France with faint straight line "MONTVO." handstamp in red. Carried throiugh the blockade of the combined Anglo-French Squadrons by the US Frigate "Raritan" to Rio and thence per "HMS Resistance" to Plymouth Dock. Struck with superb two line "PACKET LETTER / DEVONPORT" in black (Robertson P2), and thence via London (Dec 21) where "Colonies / &c. Art. 12" applied in red. Boulogne entry mark in red and Blaye arrival on reverse (Dec 26) where charged '20' décimes due in manuscript plus '1D' handstruck for delivery. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 102. Carried on the "Saintonge" to Rio and thence via the "Estramadure". Red framed "PD" at left and circular "Aus Frankreich Per Aachen / Franco" in red (Sept 20). Manuscript confirmation of sending date written across the cover but an early and scarce cover. Illustrated in Editon D'Or 59 on page 108.

Steamer", struck on despatch with oval "Admon de Correos / Montevideo" datestamp (Dec 31), carried on the "Magdalena" to Southampton. Thence via London (Feb 4) and HAPAG Steamer "Hammonia" on her last New York voyage and struck with "New York Am. Pkt." arrival (Feb 26) and "90" (cents) due marking for double rate and Depreciated Currency handstamp "U.S. NOTES / 138" in black. A fine 'Double Atlantic Crossing entire'. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 110.

    Messageries Impériales 1865 (Oct 14): Entire letter from Montevideo to New York endorsed "pr. Steamer via Bordeaux", franked by France 1862/63 40 c. orange vertical pair and 80 c. carmine in a creased horizontal strip of three tied by dotted Anchor lozenge in black. Octagonal "MONTEVIDEO" Consular datestamp (Oct 15) at right and the entire carried by Brazilian Ship "Wanama" to Rio as the French Packet "Carmel" was in dock due to a boiler explosion. The adhesives also tied by octagonal datestamp and carried by "Navarre" to Bordeaux, thence via closed bag to New York (Dec 5) where treated as fully paid.

    French Military Concessionary Rate 1861 (Nov 17): Large part cover at Military Concession rate from Montevideo to France bearing 1853 20 c. blue, shaved at top, margins on three sides, tied by dotted Anchor lozenge in black. Carried by the Brazilian Ship "Diligent" (replacing the "Saintonge") to Rio de Janeiro. Transferred there and struck with octagonal "CORRESP. D. ARMÉES / NAVARRE" datestamp (Nov 17) in black (Salles fig. 1028) and, alongside, circular "BÉARN / *" datestamp (same day) in black (Salles fig. 1001). Bordeaux arrival cds and 'Bordeaux a Cette' TPO (Dec 20) on reverse. Flaps missing but just two recorded Mails are recorded carried by the "Diligent". Illustrated in Edition D'Or on page 113. A rare cover.

Carried on the RMSP "Tamar" to Southampton with London cds (Sept 7) in red on reverse and charged "1/4 d." due to pay; thence via Aachen to Cologne where rated "17" silvergroschen due in manuscript.

    1866: 10 c. green imperforate, a used example with just clear to large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at base, on small 1867 cover to Switzerland tied by barred obliterator in blue. "Correio / Montevideo" cds in black at left (July 24) and thence carried by British ship to Southampton where struck with Southampton cds (Aug 31) and "SOUTHAMPTON / SHIP LETTER" two line handstamp in black and framed "GB /1F 60c." accountancy marking. Calais and Paris (Sept 3) datestamps and further Convention marking applied in black "F/29" (Van der Linden fig. 1162). Basel cds on reverse and taxed '100' rappen due upon receipt. Carried on Allan Line Steamer "Austria" from Liverpool with gothic "2" (pence) Canadian credit in red. Reverse with Montreal arrival cds (June 6). Only two covers recorded carried by a Tait & Co. ship and a rare "Double Atlantic Crossing". Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 117. A delightful cover.

Sud-America" of the Lavarello Line, struck with rare "♚ Savoy Arms / SERVIZIO POSTALE ITALIANO / MONTEVIDEO" cachet in blue with italic "con Bastim. Mercant." cachet in black. Disinfected with slits, charged with handstruck "4" and 1870 Postage Due 40 c. applied and tied by 'Genova' cds (April 21). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 122 and in "Italian Post Offices Abroad" by Zanaria, Serra, Dal Negro on page 282. A superb cover of great rarity with just three such recorded - no example in the Giorgio Magnani collection. Cert. E. Diena (2009).
