Miss Maclear was the daughter of Sir Thomas Maclear who ran the Astronomical Observatory at the Cape. The reverse of the envelope bears the embossed seal of the "2nd Batallion of the 10th North Lincolnshire Regiment, Egypt". A most attractive and rare cover carried at the newly introduced (February 1, 1864) local rate of 1d.
