A superb and very rare combination cover, and certainly one of the most visually attractive examples of a mixed issue franking extant.

    Great Britain 1855: 4 d. deep blue, two examples, both with good to large margins all round, used on 1855 double rate cover to West Wittering, Sussex, each cancelled by vertical manuscript pen strokes. Reverse with oval dated WORCESTER and CAPE TOWN datestamps (July 21) in red and further circular Cape Town cds in red. London transit cds in red (Sept 28) and Chichester cds in blue of the same day.     Denmark 1858: 1 d. rose, 4 d. deep blue and 1 s. bright yellow-green, all with clear to large margins all round, used on 1859 single rate cover to Frederikshavn, Denmark tied by three strikes of CGH triangular obliterators in black. Fine oval CRADOCK datestamp of despatch at left (June 7) in black, the reverse with both oval CAPE TOWN datestamps in red (June 13). Front with 'London / Paid' cds in red (July 29), red oval 'P' and straight line "Franco" in black and reverse with Hamburg transit. Rated '2' skilling due upon receipt in manuscript. Over-franked by ½ d. but no such value was available and thus the over-payment became mandatory. A spendid and extremely rare three colour franking of great charm. Cert. BPA (2013).

Reverse with oval CRADOCK datestamp (June 19) in red, front with with CAPE TOWN / CAPE COLONY cds in black (June 19), oval 'PD' in red and London transit cds (Aug 17) in red and manuscript credit '1/4d.' docketing in red crayon. Reverse with Berlin arrival (Aug 19) cds. Flap missing but a fine example of the 1/8d. single rate to Prussia (4d. internal + 1s. to UK + 4 d. UK-Prussia). A spectacular and extremely rare cover.rnrnNote: We have not recorded another block of four of the De La Rue 4d. value on a cover to a foreign destination.

    Australian States/Victoria 1858: 4 d. deep blue on white paper, a fine used example with good to large margins all round, used on 1858 cover endorsed 'Per first Steamer via 'Galle' or Mauritius' tied by CGH triangular handstamp in black. Reverse with circular CAPE TOWN / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE datestamp in red (Jan 30) and faint Melbourne oval arrival datestamp in red (May 9). A fine and scarce cover to a rare destination.rnrnNote: The addressee, Falconer Larkworthy (1833-1928), was born in Weymouth, UK and at the age of 16 joined a London firm of merchants trading with India. He was posted to Mauritius and then to Cape Town and thereafter to Victoria where he gained Banking experience with the Orintal Banking Corporation in the goldfields in North East Victoria. In 1860 he was transferred to manage the Oriental's branch in Auckland, New Zealand.

    New Zealand 1858: 4 d. deep blue on white paper, a fine used example with close to good margins all round, used on 1860 cover endorsed 'Per first Ship via Mauritius & Australia' tied by CGH triangular handstamp in black. Reverse with circular CAPE TOWN / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE datestamp in red (Aug 27) and obverse with circular AUCKLAND / NEW ZEALAND arrival datestamp (Jan 25, 1861). A fine and scarce cover to a very rare destination.rnrnNote: The addressee, Falconer Larkworthy (1833-1928), was born in Weymouth, UK and at the age of 16 joined a London firm of merchants trading with India. He was posted to Mauritius and then to Cape Town and thereafter to Victoria where he gained Banking experience with the Oriental Banking Corporation in the goldfields in North East Victoria. In 1860 he was transferred to manage the Oriental's branch in Auckland, New Zealand. Once gold discoveries were made in May 1861 Otago, Larkworthy stayed on using the experience he had gained in Victoria to facilitate gold export business for the Oriental Bank. He returned to London joining the Commercial Union Assurance Co. in 1863 as a Director.

    China 1858: 4 d. deep blue on white paper, a fine used example with good to large margins all round but crossed by file fold, used on 1856 cover to Carlowitz & Harkort & Co. in Canton, China endorsed 'per Str. Calinäk' to pay the inland rate, tied by CGH triangular obliterator in black. Reverse with 'Cape Town / Cape of Good Hope' circular datestamp (Feb 26) in red and HONG-KONG double arc cds in black (June 9) and rated '4' (pence) due in manuscript on arrival in Canton. There are just two covers bearing the Cape Triangular issue used to China, the other (ex John Levitt and Sir Maxwell Joseph) is addressed to Foochow with a De La Rue 6 d. and 1864/65 4 d. blue; thus this is the earliest stamped usage by seven years. An extraordinary destination for a Cape cover.rnrnNote: Richard Carlowitz, originally from Hamburg, established the first German trading company in Canton in 1844.

    1853: 1 d. deep brick-red on blued paper in a pair used with single 4 d. deep blue on slightly blued, used on registered 1854 cover to Somerset East tied by CGH triangular handstamps in black. Reverse with circular and oval framed CAPE TOWN datestamps (May 25) in red and the circular datestamp shows that the letter was appearently mis-sorted to the English Packet mail, the mistake being rectified. Obverse with superb SOMERSET EAST oval datestamp (June 3) and returned back to Cape Town with oval datestamp (June 8) in red. The 1 d. pair with margin just grazed on one stamp but an extremely scarce cover of delightful appearance. Cert. Ferchenbauer (1989).
