    Apam 4 r. black on yellow, diagonally bisected for the 1 real rate to Vera Cruz, tied by two line FRANCO EN IROLO / JULIO 13 1861 handstamp (Schatzkes fig. 32) in black. The stamp without trace of District overprint, this front of cover has always been a contentious item, showing one of just two or three known cancellations from this small Office from which no other 1861 stamps are recorded. The sole recorded 'split' from the Apam District. It is illustrated in 'Artes de Mexico' (Bash, 1967) and in 'Mexicana' article by J. K. The adhesives with large margins, but for small triangular nick in third stamp, and in deep shades tied by two line FRANCO / EN TONALA handstamps (Schatzkes fig. 30) in black. Manuscript notation above the adhesives with instructions to send the cover to Buena Vista by 'Special Delivery' (sin tocar otra Oficina de Correos) as Buena Vista had no Post Office.     1858/63: Lot eleven entire letters, all sent to Wendelstadt Esqu. in Cologne Prussia, despatched either in Montevideo or Nueva Mehlem and sent via Southampton, the majority of the covers with London and Aachen border as well as Cologne arrival datestamps on reverse. Nueva Mehlem is a German settlement on the east bank of the Uruguay river, the brothers Richard and Karl Wendelstadt migrated to there from Germany around 1850.

    1840 (Jan 22): Entire letter from Caracas to London with fine strike of large framed Forwarding Agent cachet of VALENTIN SALBOCH Y CA applied in La Guayra, oval "Guayra / Franca" handstamp in red below. Charged 2/3 d. due in manuscript on arrival in London (March 22) and rate checked by Inspector's Crown handstamp in red. Rate was found to be correct and '2/3d.' to pay again written at top. Entire opens well for display, a scarce usage. Opinion Holcombe (1990).
