Many of the largest stamp collections of our time can be admired at exhibitions. However, not all collectors participate in philatelic competitions. Some large collections slumber in secrecy, many know of the existence, few might also know selected pieces of the collection - but in totality one can only first see those collections in an auction. Then, however, it is often too late to identify the “philatelic handwriting" of the collector or evaluate the collection for research.

The situation is similar with the collection "Erivan" by Helga and Erivan Haub. Both have in many years of collecting activities put together several outstanding collections, that would certainly have achieved awards at shows - if they had been exhibited.

OLDENBURG - from pre-philately until the end of the postal authority - The collection of Heinrich Sanders

Heinrich Sanders always regretted that the knowledge of the most collectors got lost when their remarkable collections were dissolved. In order to preserve his knowledge which is included in the extensive descriptions of his collection for future "Oldenburg"-collectors he stipulated not only that his collection should go back into the philatelic cacle, but also a book should be published of it.

At the same time of the release of the book "Oldenburg" - from pre-philately until the end of the postal authority" the collection was auctioned during the 362nd Heinrich Koehler auction on March 18, 2016 in Wiesbaden.

By means of the „older literature“ the author tried to gather new findings and then illustrate those with the help of modern methods.

For decades he studied this collection area as potential collector within the “Forschungsgemeinschaft Sachsen e.V. (= Study Group of Saxony) and discussed some topics with well-known philatelists which also resulted in new findings which are clearly presented in this book as well.

Emphases were put on the production technology, the usage of entires within Saxony, the German-Austrian postal association, the mail abroad and overseas. On December 31, 1867 the Postal Authority of Saxony came to an end and part of the remainder envelopes were adapted and used by the successor postal authority (= Norddeutscher Bund). This collection area is also included in this book. In order to assess the frequency all deliveries are shown in quantity charts. Additionally it was attempted to judge the rarity by means of relative frequency.

Above all, the author wants to encourage advanced philatelists to reprocess their collection of Saxony entires or animate beginners for this collection area, which is so diverse that an interested philatelist can have fun for decades to build up his collection of entires. This manual shall be a useful support.

There hardly is another similar philatelic collection like the 'Amadeus' collection presented in this book! The collection has never been shown to the public and only excerpts are described here.
