    1484 (Aug 14): Entire letter from Aleppo to Venice, some ageing around folds, unusually with arrival noted on face panel (March 21, 1485); probably mailed via Alexandretta and Constantinople, a journey time of seven months. Rare and interesting entire.

    1586 (Sept 29): Entire letter in Italian from Aleppo to Marseille, the cross hatching in manuscript at top indicating pre-payment. The Turks at this juncture and for most of the 16th Century were at War with the West, trade was stifled and correspondence dwindled, and this letter is therefore most unusual. Slit on front is for sealing with a string or ribbon for protection, not for disinfection.
