    1854 (April 16): Entire letter from Palermo (Sicily) to Rodels / Switzerland, mailed via Genoa and Turin, struck in transit with superb "Diritto / Sardo / Estero" handstamp in black with corresponding rates alongside (Sardinian 20 c. / Foreign 10 c.) applied on TPO between Turin and Susa (Van Der Linden fig. 976A). A superb and rare cover.

    Sardinia 1857 (Oct 7): Unpaid cover from Turin to Aarhus, Denmark struck on despatch with "Torino" cds, thence via Culoz and reverse with Thurn & Taxis and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds's (Oct 11). An interesting cover noted at top as weighing 11½ grams; therefore a double letter under Sardinian and French tariffs (single rate was under 7½ grams) but charged as a single letter on arrival: "8½" in manuscript on reverse in red crayon (2 sgr. Italian share, 2½ sgr French share, 1 sgr. Belgian share and 3 sgr. German share). The total postage charged was 44 skilling, double that to pay for a letter via France to Sardinia.

    1855 (Feb. 28): 40 c. rosso mattone horiz. pair tied by "Nizza Maritime " cds. on small envelope via "Antibes ... Mars 55" to England. Four margined pair with sheet margin on top, left stamp folded over the back and defective, nevertheless a rare usage Sassone = EUR 16'500 for single franking, EUR 45'000 for compl. pair on cover.

    1862: 10 c. brown-orange with double inverted embossed print of the central head, very fresh and with large margins all round, tied by "Anghiari 18 giu 62" cds to outer letter sheet with another strike alongside, sent to Sienna.     1857/58: 80 c. brown dark-orange with inverted head print and 20 c. greyish blue, both with margins clear to large, tied by 'Porto Maurizio 12 gen 59' cds's to entire letter, sent via Nizza (Jan 13), Paris (Jan 15) and London (Jan 17) to Buenos Aires Argentina. A great rarity, not mentioned in Sassone with this colour, in the usual condition for letters directed overseas. Signed Emilio Diena & Asinelli, cert. Guglielmo Oliva (1963) and Colla (2002).
