1869 Mount Athos: Printed entire sent from the Novgorod administrative board with blue seal and NOVGOROD cancel, addressed to the Skete of St Andrew on Mont Athos and routed care of an Odessa merchant which was the method used prior to the introduction of ROPiT services. 1858: 30 k. lilac-red & green perf. 14½ x 15, fresh colour and well centered, watermark '3' shifted slightly to the bottom, pen cancellation removed and stamp cleaned, perforation repaired. As this stamp was issued not earlier than February 1858 and as pen strokes were obliterating the adhesives only in the two first months of 1858 this is an extremely early use of the 30 k. stamp. In spite of its imperfections and modifications this is a scarce and desirable example of the rarest classical Russian stamp. Russian oval framed FRANKIROVANO in mauve, Austrian "A. / P.D." in black and French "AUTR. AVRICOURT 2 AVRIL 72" entry cds in blue alongside. Reverse with Paris transit and Montpellier arrival cds (April 3). A fine and fresh cover with a rare usage of the vertically laid stamps, cert. Mikulski (1994).
