    1899: Soldier's Letter to 'The New Club', Grafton Street, London endorsed on obverse "On Special Service, No Stamps procurable, I.H. Howe, Lt. W.A.A.F. Boussa" in manuscript. The cover entered the post some 320 miles south with framed "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY / CHARTERED & LIMITED / 13 JUN 1899 / POST OFFICE / BURUTU" handstamp in violet (Gi Type 6) applied on reverse. Struck on arrival with "1d. / 620" charge raised on arrival in Portsmouth with further manuscript "T" and "2d." to pay in blue crayon. London arrival cds's (July 10) on reverse. A rare cover from this small west African Field Force campaign against the French.

    1900: 1 d. dull mauve & carmine, a single used example on 1901 cover probably from Jebba to London endorsed "via Lagos" at top left, tied by manuscript "Post Office / Lagos / 16/8/01" in red ink - the hand writing appears to be the same as the Postmaster of Jebba and one must assume the 'Lagos' in this instance was in error as reverse shows "LAGOS / W. AFRICA" cds (Aug 26) in black and arrival cds (Sept 26). Slight aging, a scarce cover.rnProvenance: Collection T.V. Roberts, Robson Lowe, London, 26 April 1989.

    1905: 1 d. dull purple & carmine, a used example on 1907 postcard (Soldier of the W.A.F.F.) to Manchester, tied by "NIGER TRAVELLING POST OFFICE" code A circular datestamp with date slugs all inverted (12 September 1907) in black. Repeated information strike below the adhesive with "Forcados" transit (Sept 15) at left. Rare.

    1905: 2 d. dull purple & yellow, a slightly faded example on 1911 cover top Bideford, Devon tied by bold strike of "SOKOTO / NORTHERN NIGERIA" cds (July 3) in black (Proud D2). Repeated information strike at left, reverse with ZUNGERU cds of transit (July 17) and Bideford arrival (Aug 14) cds. Minor edge wear but scarce.
