1852 (June 28): Entire letter from Gavlan, Dodangeh Rural District, Hurand District, Ahar County, East Azerbaijan Province, Persia written by the American Missionary Mary Susan Rice (serving in Persia between 1847-1864) to Miss Mary Child in Lincoln, Mass., USA, endorsed "Ship" at lower left. Carried outside the Mails and handed into the Post upon arrival with "BOSTON / MASS." circular datestamp (Nov 29) in black, straight line "SHIP" and charge marking "7" (cents) all in black. The letter with much social content - "pray for woman here, as ignorant & degraded - thank God for increasing encouragements, we have to labor for their spiritual good...", Rice also discusses meeting Rev. and Mrs. Perkins, the Stoddards and Mitchells (all three couples are on the Missionary listing), teaching and reading letters from a further missionary in Erzerum. An extremely rare entire letter.rnNote: Just 44 American Missionaries served in Persia between 1835 and 1870 (a full listing accompanies the lot), of these 24 were female.Starting bid : 500 CHFHammer price : 600 CHFLot# : 1113 Iran
