Austro-Hungarian Invasion 1878 (Sept 10): Stampless cover and full contents (translation enclosed) from Trebinje to Lomnitz, sent by Lieutenant Frederic Schlechta of the 74th Infantry Regiment, struck with fine "ETAPPEN POSTAMT / No. 6" datestamp (Sept 28) in black. Reverse with "Zara" cds of transit (Oct 1) and Lomnitz bei Jicin arrival (Oct 4). The Feldpost at Trebinje opened on the day after this letter was begun. Envelope imperfections but a scarce cover with fascinating and graphic account of the battle at Trebinje: the subject of an article by Keith Tranmer in 'Forces Postal History Society' journal (Winter 2005, pages 173-174 enclosed with the lot).rnrn"10 Sept 1878....one hour before Trebinje the marching Brigade was fired upon. Austro-Hungarian Invasion 1878 (Sept 23): Stampless cover and full contents from "Lager auf den Höhen Linbach" (Camp on the heights above Linbac) to Mödling, Vienna, sent by Major Albert Hirsch, a Company commander in the 20th Infantry Truppen Division at Pakova struck with small "K.K. FELDPOST EXPOSITUR / No. 4" datestamp (Sept 23). Reverse with Modling arrival cds (Sept 28). Full translation of letter enclosed - "we can see the Turkish bonfires from our Camp...at Tuzla a deputation came with news and there may be skirmishing soon". Field Post Office No. 4 was in use for approximately two months. Slight closed tear at top of envelope but a rare cover.
