    1853 (Sept): 4 d. deep blue on lightly blued paper, a used corner maginal adhesive with large margins all round and part of adjoining stamp at base, sheets margins on two sides with the marginal lined watermark, cancelled with light CGH obliterator. A most attractive stamp.

    1855: 4 d. deep blue on white paper, a fresh and fine adhesive with large margins and parts of two adjoining stamps, tied by light CGH obliterator to envelope from SWELLENDAM (Oct. 10, 1858) to CAPE TOWN (Oct. 11) with matching datestamps in red on reverse. Appealing cover.

    Woodblock 1861: 4 d. pale bright blue on laid paper, a used fine adhesive with large margins all round and parts of the adjoining stamp at base, tied by light CGH obliterator to 1861 envelope from GRAAFF-REINETT (May 14, 1858) to CAPE TOWN (May 15) with matching datestamps in red on reverse. A fine and very scarce cover, cert. BPA (1990).rnNote: The cover was directed to Miss Maclear at the Royal Observatory in Cape Town. The remote place of despatch speaks for Thomas Maclear (1794-1879) the Royal astronomer from Cape Town on one of his geodetic surveys writing back home.
