Lot# : 802 Russian P.O. in China
1897 (Nov 4): 10 k. dark blue, Russian precursor stamp, tied by cds of Peking (Tchilinghirian and Stephen, fig. 466; cancel lost during the Boxer rebellion) on cover from the Dutch Legation to London, on reverse Troitzkosavsk (border city between Mongolia and Russia proper; Sep 19) and Moscow (Dec 12) transit as well as London (Jan 3) arrival marks. An 'OBEZZARASHENO' (disinfected) mark was applied in Troitzkosavsk documenting the fight of the Russians against the plague. Vertical fold away from the stamps does not distract from the rarity of this combined use of disinfection mark on a cover from China prior to the construction of the Transsiberian Railway.Starting bid : 1,000 CHFHammer price : 1,800 CHFLot# : 804 Russian P.O. in China
