1873/74: Essay by William Bell for the 1 d. value on card (54 x 75 mm.), with Queen's head and vignette in grey and as issued, the frame hand-painted in deep and pale violet, with figures of value at sides (removed from issued stamp) and corners with issue date '1874' and pencil annotation to place figures '7' and '4' upright. Stamp Duty 1879: Die Proof for 5 s. value in pale brown on cream wove paper, 34 x 40 mm., engraved by Arthur Williams of Sands & MacDougall, typographed at the Victorian Stamp Printer's. Unfinished State of the Die with letters 'J' and 'L' missing from the left and right of the 'Victoria Stamp Duty' frame, these letters standing for Charles Jackson and Ludwig Lang who designed much of the 1879 Stamp Duty series. 1885/1895: Error of Colour, 4 d. lilac instead of magenta, the famous fine unused horizontal pair of this rare stamp, issued in error during December 1886, of excellent colour, well centred and with large part og. Trivial imperfections of no significance, an exceptional pair of great rarity, there being but 9 recorded unused examples - this pair being the finest of the two recorded pairs of this error and, indeed, the only horizontal one. 1885/1895: Error of Colour, 4 d. lilac instead of magenta, a fine used example of this rare stamp, neatly cancelled by part 'Melbourne' duplex, clearly dated 'DE 30 / 1886' in black (the earliest recorded use is December 21, 1886, this stamp thus falling very much 'in period'). 1886/96: High Values, £ 8 mauve & brown-orange, wmk. V over Crown upright, perf. 12½, a fine unused example of good centering and glorious colour, with part og. and horizontal gum crack. Geoff Kellow records just two examples in unused condition outside the Royal Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, this being the sole example with partial original gum.
