USA 1852 (Feb 23): Trans-Pacific entire letter from Hobart, Tasmania to San Francisco endorsed 'per Architect' (Baltimore Clipper) struck on arrival with framed SHIP / 6 in black and 'SAN FRANCISCO / Cal.' circular datestamp (May 14) in black. A fine and scarce entire - the journey was achieved in 77 days. Interesting ccontent to entire: 'I am waiting the arrival of more American whalers to furnish me with more oil...vessels are laying up here as fast as they arrive and not a single Whaler now in Port that is not laid up...Captain Libby and all the Ship's Company have gone to the Victoria diggings. The range of the Gold District extends about 400 miles...the quality and value considerably exceeds that of California Gold. It is with great difficulty that good order can be maintained at the Mines, all kinds of depredations are being committed, as bad, if not worse, than California ever was...'. Gold had been discovered in Victoria in 1851.
