1841, One Penny red-brown handstamped SPECIMEN, plate 90, sheet marginal strip of eight, IE-IL, large regular margins, heavy horizontal crease, unmounted mint with full original gum, and Two Pence blue, handstamped SPECIMEN, plate 3, irregular sheet marginal block of eight HA-HD + IC-ID + JC-JD, good to large margins all round except for HC (just touched), virtually full original gum, HD, ID and JD unmounted, others with some paper adhesions, few imperfections incl. horizontal gum bends and small scissors cuts in the margins between the stamps, otherwise both multiples (1d. & 2d.) are in a very fresh state of preservation. Very rare multiples, according to Samuel & Huggins in 'Specimen Stamps & Stationery of GB' three sheets of the 1841, 1d. red and 2d blue were overprinted SPECIMEN in about 1849 and sent as 'samples of postage adhesive stamps' to three different European Governments planning to issue adhesive stamps as part of a postal reform in their countries. One of these was Prussia and the sheets sent to this country are preserved intact in the postage stamp collection of the German Postal Museum in Berlin. The 2d plate 3 block of 8 formerly joined via the block of 4, IA-JB (recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index Register) the KA-LB block of 4 from the 'Chartwell' collection Stanley.Gibbons Spec.
