1844 (Aug 10): Four sides of entire letter from George Town to Yeovil, Somerset written by one William Pelham, rated '5d.' in manuscript for 1 d. internal fee and 4d. for outgoing Ship Letter, and a further '1/8d.' due upon receipt in Yeovil with arrival on reverse (1 Feb 1845). A most interesting letter: "(The Governor, Sir John Eardley-Wilmot) has taken the Labour of the Convict population from the settlers, and under the present probabtion system the prisoners are all let loose and walk about with a slip of paper called a Pass and hiring themselves at not less than ...£9 a year.
