Lot# : 785 Gambia
1862: Great Britain 4 d. vermilion, hairlines (Gi 81), two defective examples used on 1864 cover addressed to Bathurst, South Africa tied by "401" numeral obliterators of Ilminster. The postal clerk saw Bathurst in the address and the cover was directed to the Gambia with two strikes (one on reverse) of the sole examples known of "MISSENT TO / GAMBIA" in black. Reverse with part flap missing but also showing double arc "SIERRA LEONE" cds in black (Dec 11) and then sent back to England with "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" in red (10 Jan 1865) and forwarded to Cape of Good Hope with Port Elizabeth cds (March 8), oval "GRAHAMS TOWN" and part BATHURST oval datestamps in black where presumably safely delivered. Despite faults, a rare and unique cover.Starting bid : 850 CHFHammer price : 1,100 CHF
