Outgoing to France, mail carried on French Paquebots, 1865 (Nov. 9): First page of Printed matter letter from Patras to Marseille franked at the inland 4 lepta printed matter rate with 1862/67 Consecutive Athens printing 2 l. yellow-bistre, a horizontal pair with good to enormous matgins including parts of two neighbouring adhesives, cancelled by one central strike of dotted '9' numeral of Patras, with matching despatch cds in black, French framed PD and "GRECE 29 NOV 65 MARSEILLE" entry cds, both in red alongside. Reverse with Athens transit cds. Filing folds well away from the franking, nevertheless an extremely rare usage, following the certificate presumably of unique nature. Certificate and accompanying letter Tseriotis (2003) Hellas 16a.rnNote: Following the postal treaty between France and Greece from 1844, still valid in 1865, printed matter from Greece to France should have been franked with the inland printed matter rate of four lepta, while not postage had to be paid for the Shipmail and French part of the journey. This changed with the 1866 postal convention, compare the 'Greece - Postal rates on Overseas Mail' collection, 214. Corinphila sale, lot 5050.
