    1 / 1
French Offices in China 1875 (May 9): Triple rate Cover from Shanghai to Munich, Bavaria, endorsed "Per French Mail to Marseilles" and bearing Siège 40 c. orange (slightly oxidised) in combination with horizontal strip of four Cérès 80 c. rose, tied by Gros Chiffres "5104" numeral lozenge, matching "SHANG-HAI CHINE 9 MAI 75" despatch cds and framed PD in red alongside. Reverse with three French ambulant and MÜNCHEN arrival (June 21) cds's as well as '13' distribution cachet. In spite of the endorsement franked with three times 120 c. for a mailing with a British vessel, but in reality it made its journey with the French vessel 'Sindh' via Saigon and Suez. For this journey only three times 100 c. would have been sufficient. Cover with the usual edge wear as to be expected, part of backflap missing, nevertheless a most interesting cover to an unexpectedly rare destination. Cert. von der Weid (1994).rnNote: The cover is directed to a member of the household of Maximilian August Eduard Graf Topor-Morawitzky (1798-1875).
