    Catalogue# : V21+V23
Austrian Levant PO's to Italy 1865 (Oct. 4): Lettersheet from Thessaloniki to Genova, endorsed "Coll' I R Posta d'Austria", franked with 1864 Arms 5 s. rose and 15 s. brown (2), all perf. 9½, with fresh colours and well embossed, tied by two line "SALONICH / 4. OCTOBRE" datestamps in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 594) with PD in black alongside. Reverse with WIEN transit as well as GENOVA arrival cds (Oct 15). Light horizontal file fold well away from adhesives and datestamps, one 15 soldi stamp with pre-use fold, some perforation irregularities not distracting from this most interesting cover. Signed Calves.rnNote: Before October 1866, 35 soldi had to be paid from the majority of the Levant PO's to Austria, also from Salonicco, additional 11 soldi were charged for two Italian rayons. These overland rates via Austria are relatively rare because they were more expensive than those using the Lloyd service. Interestingly, in this case the 11 soldi for Italy had been 'forgotten' and the cover was marked fully paid to the receiver using the PD handstamp. An extraordinary rare case in a time when the postal clerks took care of every soldo.
