  • Lot# : 7527 Austrian Levant

Postal relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina 1855 (Oct. 16): Letter sheet from Bosnia to Pest, brought with messenger to the Austrian auxilliary Quarantine station in Rajevoselo at the border between Bosnia and the Slovene Military Zone, with a handwritten notion in German "N. 304 Von aussen und innen rein geräuchert bei dem Filial Rastell zu Racvoselo am 16 8ber 855 / Signature" (Meyer page 50/51) was applied. Mailed from Austrian Post Office in Winkowze where 1854 3 kr. red and 6 kr. brown were added, two fine and fresh examples with fair to good margins, tied by two line "WINKOVZE / .. OCT." datestamp (Müller 3255c) in black. Reverse with Esseg transit and Pesth arrival datestamps (Oct 22) in black. Illustrated and discussed in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 144 and in the Ferchenbauer handbook part IV on page 471.rnNote: The Austrian postal administration planned at the beginning of the 1850's to open a Post Office in Sarajevo to improve the postal relationships with Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, after the opening of an Ottoman PO in Sarajevo, these plans became obsolete. The mail from Bosnia to Austria had therefore to be brought by messenger to an Austrian PO for onward transmission.
