Lot# 7517 - Auction 250-256

  • Lot# : 7517 Austrian Levant

Early Consular Post offices 1818 (Sept. 19): Entire letter from Bucharest to Vienna showing two line "BUKUREST / in der Walachey" handstamp (similar to Müller 2008a; similar to but not the same as Tchilinghirian fig. 705, with second "U" in Bukurest) in black, vinegar disinfection, reverse with crisp Rothenturm 'SIGILLIUM  SANITATIS' disinfection strike and parts of corresponding wax seal still present, charged '14' kreuzer upon arrival. Some imperfections and typical doodle on front panel as usual with this correspondence, but an extremely rare early usage, illustrated and discussed in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 134.rnNote: By the end of the Napoleonic Wars only five Consular Post Offices had been established, with one in Bucharest. The present handstamp is the second earliest handstamp introduced after those supplied to Constantinople.
