  • Lot# : 4532 Transvaal

Typographed by M.J. Viljoen in Pretoria 1870 (May 1-July 4): 1 s. yellow-green, coarse impression, imperforate on thicker hard paper, a diagonally bisected used example on 1876 cover to Woodbush tied by bold strike of circular "16" numeral obliterator with corresponding MARABAS STAD / Z.A.R. / ZUID AFRIKA cds (March 1) with handstruck "T" marking alongside. A cover in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II bears the other half of this stamp, used on the same day from Marabas Stad (Jorgensen census #86 and 87). Small closed opening tear at top but an exceptionally late usage of a Viljoen adhesive, taxed but the bisect evidently condoned. A fresh and fine cover of great charm Gi = £ 2'750.rnrnProvenance: Collection Dr. Alan Drysdall, Spink, London, 1 March 2006, lot 1091.
