    1877: Stampless Official cover, countersigned at lower left by Sir Theophilus Shepstone, Special Commissioner to the Transvaal, mailed from Newcastle to His Excellency, Sir Bartle Frere, King William's Town, Eastern Frontier, Cape Colony, struck with "No. 20 PO / NATAL" cds on despatch (Christmas Day) in black. 'East London' transit cds (Jan 9, 1878) alongside and faint 'King William's Town' arrival cds of arrival. Reverse with 'GPO / Natal' transit cds (Dec 28). A rare cover - at this date Sir Bartle Frere was involved in the 9th Frontier War, having arrived in Southern Africa in March 1877 two weeks prior to the annexation of the Transvaal by Sir Theophilus.
