    1854c: The original Essay engraved by William Humphrys, prepared by Perkins, Bacon & Co. for the printing contract, showing the half-length Chalon portrait of Queen Victoria on engine-turned diagonally cross-hatched background with ornamental circular surround, State 1 without the circular frame-line dividing the portrait from the backgriound, printed in black on India paper (65 x 50 mm.) and mounted on soft wove card (88 x 74 mm.).
