Lot# : 2096 Cape of Good Hope
China 1858: 4 d. deep blue on white paper, a fine used example with good to large margins all round but crossed by file fold, used on 1856 cover to Carlowitz & Harkort & Co. in Canton, China endorsed 'per Str. Calinäk' to pay the inland rate, tied by CGH triangular obliterator in black. Reverse with 'Cape Town / Cape of Good Hope' circular datestamp (Feb 26) in red and HONG-KONG double arc cds in black (June 9) and rated '4' (pence) due in manuscript on arrival in Canton. There are just two covers bearing the Cape Triangular issue used to China, the other (ex John Levitt and Sir Maxwell Joseph) is addressed to Foochow with a De La Rue 6 d. and 1864/65 4 d. blue; thus this is the earliest stamped usage by seven years.
