    1633 (Nov 3): Entire letter from the Viceroy of Peru, Luis Jeronimo Fernandez de Cabrera y Bobadilla (1589-1647) IV Condé de Chinchón,  addressed to Guancanca endorsed at lower left "Virrey" (Viceroy) and signed in full inside by the Viceroy during his term of Office (1629-1639). An extremely early letter from Lima - Pizarro arrived there less than 100 years before and mail from this period was mostly destroyed during the 1687 earthquake. Rare.

    1868: Lecoq 1 d. blue-green, fine example in a rich shade with large margins on three sides and close at base, variety 'Embossed Arms Inverted' but actually an 'Inverted Frame' variety, used on December 19, 1872 cover from Callao to Lima tied by large part Callao datestamp. Reverse with Lima cds of receipt (Dec 20) in black. Both stamp and cover in excellent condition, a magnificent example of this rarity on cover, with just five such recorded by Herbert Moll on letter.

    Note: All of the five usages of this stamp in the blue-green shade on letter occur in December 1872, this example dated December 19 being the second earliest known, the first cover was also from the 1957 sale (lot 6389) being used on December 13, 1872 and was recently sold again by Corinphila in the Lugón Badaracco collection. The third example was in the Piaggio collection and was dated December 23, 1872. The fourth example was used from Tacna on December 25, collection Eitner, Corinphila sale 158 (June 2009), lot 4190.     1874/95: Small group of covers (4) with 5 c. blue pair used on mourning envelope to Arequipa cancelled by two strikes of circular 'T' handstamps in black, 1879 and 1880 covers to Lima at registered rate from Huancavelica, one bearing four 10 c. green and the other a pair of 20 c. brown-red on a front, also a superb 1887 cover to Huancavelica franked by pair of 1886 5 c. orange tied by floral handstamps and 'Ayacucho' cds. Condition varies but a generally fine group.

    1874/76: 10 c. green, a fine vertical strip of three used on 1879 cover from Arica to Paris, the adhesives neatly tied by scarce use of framed ARICA handstamps in black (Lamy & Rinck fig. 40). Oval Agent's marking above and reverse showing Lima / Principal' transit cds (Sept 7) in black. Red circular 'Angl. / Amb. Calais' cds at right (Oct 13). Very scarce usage outside Lima at this date, a fresh and fine cover.

    Chilean Occupation 1881/82: 1 c. orange optd. Chilean Arms in blue and 10 c. green (2) optd. Chilean Arms in red, used on registered 1882 cover to Italy by French Mailboat, cancelled by large lozenge of 40 dots on despatch (Feb 12) with 'Lima / Principal' cds in black at right and oval framed CERTIFICADO LIMA at lower left. Superb octagonal * PANAMA - UNION * / PAQ. F. D. No. 3 (Feb 22) in black (Salles fig. 1502) and carried on the Paquebot 'Colombie' from Colon. Struck in Paris with extremely scarce 15 PARIS 15 / CHARGEMENTS cds (March 22) in red. The cover refolded, some creasing and flap damage on reverse but showing 'Genova Ferrovia' cds and 'Sestri Levante' arrival (March 24) cds's and partial signature of receipt. Despite imperfections a cover of great beauty and rarity.

    1867: Llama 10 c. vermilion used on 1876 cover to Genoa, Italy tied by segmented cork cancellation in black with 'Lima / Principal' cds alongside (April 20), thee cover additionally franked by Great Britain 1870 ½ d. pl. 6, defective, 9 d. straw pl. 4 and 10 d. red-brown pl. 1 for British postage (6 d. to Panama + 1/1½ d. to Genoa). Struck on arrival in Panama with three line dated PANAMA TRANSIT (April 30) and the British stamps nullified by a '0' marking in black. The cover travelled by French Paquebot instead of a British Steamer with octagonal PANAMA / PAQ. FR. A. No. 2 (May 1) unusually struck in red (Salles fig. 1413) and carried on the 'Lafayette'' with triangular 'T' marking at lower right in black. Charged with handstruck '14' decimi in black and by 1870 Italian Postage Due 40 c. and 1 lire tied by Genova datestamp (May 27). Minor imperfections but a quite extraordinary and attractive cover.

    1874: Postage Due 5 c. vermilion, horizontal pair applied to reverse of in-coming 1876 cover from Great Britain, cancelled by Lima cds (Dec 18) in black; franked on front by 1873/80 Huth perfinned 6 d. grey pl. 15 and 1 s. green pl. 12 (Gi 147+150) tied by London duplexes (Nov 15) in black. The Dues slightly off the edge of cover but fresh and fine, a scarce usage that displays well.

    Note: Peru did not join the U.P.U. until April 1, 1879.
