Campeche 8 r. red-lilac, four fine overlapping examples, three showing a double District overprint, one struck in red and the other in black, the first 8 r. with just a black District overprint, used on small piece in combination with fine 2 r. yellow green without District overprint. The adhesives all cancelled by oval '0' handstamps in black (Schatzkes unrecorded) and somewhat obscuring the overprints, perhaps deliberately, but leaving the Hidalgo vignette clear on each stamp. Campeche received just 720 of the 8 r., of which 192 were returned unsold. An unusual and rare piece, the sole recorded example of the 8 reales adhesive with a double overprint in two colours. Cert. One or two minor faults but a remarkable 42 reales franking, only 720 of the 8 reales were invoiced to Campeche of which 192 were returned. A magnificent and unique cover. Cert. Jaretzky (1987).

Guanajuato 4 r. black on yellow, vertically bisected and 2 r. black on rose, vertically bisected; used on famous 1861 cover from Guanajuato to Mexico City to pay the 3 reales rate; tied by circular FRANCO / GUANAJUATO datestamp (Schatzkes fig. 476) in blue (May 4). Both stamps are from the first delivery of the 1861 issue to Guanajuato (2'070 of the 2 reales, 660 of the 4 reales) as by this date all the 1 real stamps had also run out (just 1'073 were sent), thus the 4 reales remaining were bisected to 'save' the few remaining 2 reales values. Some minor aging of no real consequence, this being an exceptional Civil War usage to a rare destination - 'Splits' to a foreign destination all being rarities. Cert. Mepsi (1972).
Note: Mazatlan received just 2'070 of the 2 reales stamps and only 660 of the 4 reales stamps by this date - the first (April 18, 1861) invoice having been stolen in transit and replaced by an identical sending on May 18, 1861.Ausruf : 1.500 CHFZuschlag : 1.600 CHFLosnr. : 4199 Mexiko
Mexico City 4 r. black on deep yellow and 1 r. black on deep green, fine four margined examples used on outer letter sheet dated APRIL 19, 1861 from Mexico City to Durango (docketing of receipt or reply May 1). The adhesives of brilliant colour and sharp impressions, cancelled by circular FRANCO / MEXICO datestamps '19 ABRIL' and thus a FIRST DAY COVER of the 1861 ISSUE. According to Samuel Chapman and Abraham Odfjell April 20, 1861 was the day of supply and it has to be surmised that the datestamp had not been changed. However, without doubt the earliest recorded usage of the issue on a fine and most attractive cover with a rare 5 reales franking. Cert. Jaretzky (1988).
