    1865 (March 24): Cover from Rio de Janeiro to Zug, Switzerland at double rate, franked by vertical pair of 1861 430 r. yellow tied by lozenge of dots handstamp in black. Rio de Janeiro cds at right with framed 'P.D.' in red and Bordeaux entry marking in blue. Reverse with Basel cds (April 20) and Zug arrival cds. Opening tear at right and the adhesives have been removed and replaced but a marvellous and extremely rare double rate cover.

    Dom Pedro Signature. 1870: Entire letter from Dom Pedro addressed to the Illustrious Reverend in Christ Cardinal Mario Mattei (at this date probably in Rome, he died in October 1870), with contents written by a secretary ending 'Escripta uo Palacio do Rio de Janeiro en 31 de Maio de 1870' and boldly signed at base by Dom Pedro "Imperator". Rare and most unusual entire.

    1883 (May 25): Registered Advice of receipt notice for a registered letter from Porto Alegre to Uruguay, franked by 1878 Dom Pedro 50 r. blue pair tied by 'Rio de Janeiro' datestamp in black, with Uruguayan registration cachet alongside and part 'Porto Alegre Do Sul' cds. Creased away from adhesives but very scarce.
    Note: The item is addressed to the famous Brazilian entrepreneur Visconde de Maua. He built the first Railroad in Brazil, a 10 mile section from the port of Maua to Fragoso, inaugurated on 30 April 1854.

    1861 (June 29): Cover from Prague addressed to the German Colony of Donna Francisca, via the Brazilian Consulate in Hamburg and Joinville, Brazil, franked by Austria 1858 15 kr. blue tied by 'Prag' despatch datestamp in black. 'Hamburg' transit (July 1) at right. The cover travelled via the Consulate and was fully prepaid at the normal rate to Hamburg, the transport thereafter being free of charges in order to develop trade with the Colony. Cover toned and a mite battered but a great rarity of Austrian, German and Brazilian Postal History.

    1868 (May 18): Extraordinary printed letter-sheet with 'Stadtplatz Blumenau' illustration inside mailed to Helmstadt, Brunswick and struck with circular 'BLUMENAU / Sta. Catherina / Brazil' at upper right in blue (Ayres 1560) with manuscript date inserted in ink. Carried at the concessionary Colonial rate free of charge to Germany, mailed with 'Hamburg' cds (Aug 19) in black, charged at printed matter rate with '2' in crayon and reverse with Helmstadt arrival. Possibly the earliest advertisement for this proposed German Settlement on the Island of Santa Catherina. A marvellous cover.

Both adhesives are from the right hand side of the sheet showing vertical frame lines at right, the 30 reis with small horizontal pre-printing paper flaw and both are well tied by bold CORREIO DE SANTOS datestamp (March 21) in black (Ayres fig. 1633). Obverse bears transit of 'Correio Geral Da Corte' datestamp (March 24) and inside is manuscript docketing of reply (May 14, 1844). A magnificent and rare cover. Signed A. Diena. Cert.
