1868 (May 18): Extraordinary printed letter-sheet with 'Stadtplatz Blumenau' illustration inside mailed to Helmstadt, Brunswick and struck with circular 'BLUMENAU / Sta. Catherina / Brazil' at upper right in blue (Ayres 1560) with manuscript date inserted in ink. Carried at the concessionary Colonial rate free of charge to Germany, mailed with 'Hamburg' cds (Aug 19) in black, charged at printed matter rate with '2' in crayon and reverse with Helmstadt arrival. Possibly the earliest advertisement for this proposed German Settlement on the Island of Santa Catherina. A marvellous cover.
