1777 (February 19): Entire letter endorsed for prepayment "Franco a la mano", mailed from Panamá to Guayaquil, Ecuador and struck with superb strike of contracted PANAMA handstamp in brown (Tizon 1 = EXT). The entire thanks the addressee for the receipt of 5'000 pesos and urges the prompt payment of the rest of the debt. 1790 (Nov 29): Entire letter written from Chagres near Panamá, addressed to Robert Hodgson "if he should stop at Corn Islands" (off the Nicaraguan coast). Without postal markings, but interesting letter in English: "Dear Bob, If this finds you at Corn Islands you will of course see what I write to Capt. Rose or any other Captain that may come there on my account. I am now going to Guatemala on a very good footing, and in a very few months shall be at the above Islands where I think you had better stay and receive some Robinson Crusoe education till you hear from me again. You will of course take under your care all our property, Negroes etc., that is on the Islands...The negro woman Nancy will show you two papers she has got and will tell you the characters of anybody almost that comes her way. Handstruck "10 R." charge marking applied on arrival in Spain in red. 5 centavos blue, the wonderful mint block of 40 from the left of the sheet of 55 subjects, positions 1-8/12-19/23-30/34-41/45-52; showing the tête-bêche variety on positions 13, 41 and 50 and position 38 with central vignette cut ot of the "50" for "5" centavos error. Sheet margin of 14 mm at top and 5 mm at left, creased through third and eighth vertical rows and insignificant inclusion to one stamp at base, but these minor faults do not spoil the appearance, a block of stunning colour and clarity of printing for these issues with large part original gum. A magnificent multiple of the most extraordinary importance to Colombian and World classic philately.

Red circular transit on front of Colon and oval "Forwarded by C. J. Fox / Aspinwall" cachet at right. From the Forwarder, the letter was carried as an enclosure for onward transmission to New York. 20 centavos grey-blue, Second Stone, the complete mint sheet of 55 (5x11), showing the corrected positions 13 and 35, of usual slightly washed colour with a few tone spots primarily in upper margin and an insignificant inclusion towards position 45 in left margin, usual minor creasing to be expected, but a wonderful multiple of stunning appearance with full sheet margins on all four sides and nearly full original gum. Just four panes are recorded of the Second Stone, this being without doubt one of the finest.

Oval framed "Forwarded By / C. J. Fox / Aspinwall" in red at right from where the letter was carried to New York (June 27 docketing inside) as an enclosure. The 20 c. adhesive crossed by file fold but a remarkable and very colourful first issue entire, exceptionally so to an overseas destination. Cert. Moorhouse (2012).

Note: On August 28, 1861 Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera altered the existing postal rates by memorandum. He ordered that the internal Colombian postal rates of April 1846 be re-introduced, namely 10 centavos for an inter-state letter and 15 centavos from one state to another. Only four letters are known sent during the four month period between August and December 1861, a new organisation being implemented on January 1, 1862.

British P.O. CARTAGENA datestamp of transit at left (Dec 3) being a mirror image from the cover above. One flap missing but a fantastic cover, one of just two known addressed to an overseas destination franked by the 1861 issue and the sole recorded combination usage of the 20 centavos on letter. 20 c. red, the extraordinary piece bearing a horizontal pair (position 32-33), marginal strip of six (positions 37-42) and 1863 20 c. red (two, one is halved at end of the piece and the other with closed tear), all cancelled by manuscript pen strokes. Position 40 in the strip of six shows the major retouch "redrawn background lines above the value". One or two minor vertical creases of no importance as this exceptional piece bears the largest known used multiple of the 20 centavos in the strip of six besides showing a rare mixed issue franking. 1 peso pink, the famous "Laarsen Stone" showing all 54 positions on the sheet of 54 subjects (9x6) on album page, it is believed by students that only about half of Laarsen's configuration is correct, however all 54 stamps are different in type as the 1 peso stone was adapted from the stone of the 2½ centavos value. The reconstruction shows 11 unused stamps including a pair, a top marginal used pair and six further marginal stamps, most being with manuscript cancellations although 11 bear handstamps. Condition is obviously variable but a wonderful and renowned plating study of immaculate provenance. An extraordinary showpiece.

A wonderful piece, the sole example of two values of the 1862 issue used on cover together, paying 20 centavos double letter rate and 40 centavos for registration. Unique.

50 c. green, the sensational piece with the block of four and single 1877 Condor 5 c. mauve in combination, the block with margins all round and in a vibrant shade, all cancelled by bold strikes of circular TUNJA handstamps in black. There is a tiny scissor cut mentioned for accuracy only inbetween the top pair and not touching design or affecting appearance, otherwise in a superb state of preservation. There are just two known used blocks of this stamp (the other also on piece, was probably cut from the same registered parcel as this and was also cancelled at Tunja). Wonderful and one of the great rarities of Colombian philately that has graced many of the finest collections.

5 c. orange, a fine horizontal pair (Types 4 and 1) used on March 1865 entire letter from Rio Negro to Sinforano Hernandez in Bogotá, cancelled by manuscript "Rio Negro". An outstandingly fresh and attractive entire.
Note: Hernandez was a gold miner and merchant, this being the earliest letter known from this correspondence.

50 c. green on bluish wove paper, the remarkable vertical strip of seven stamps, all Type I, marginal from left of sheet, stamp at lower left corner turned sideways, of excellent colour and appearance, some thinning not apparent on face and insignificant scissor cut between sixth and seventh stamps and usual creasing on a multiple this size, but extremely rare positional piece with large part original gum.
