Postal Stationery 1890: South Australia Stamp Design Competition, an Essay for proposed postal stationery card, with postcard sized artwork for a 1 d. card with magnificent ornamental lettering and Arms imprint (and used on the issued 1 d. card) and unadopted 'stamp' at right, hand-drawn and painted in brownish India ink on card. The Design competition attracted 56 entrants who submitted over 100 designs. This was a partial winning entry. 1840 (Dec 19): Entire letter written from "Ship Perfect, Bass Straits" addressed to Stornoway, Outer Hebrides, Scotland mailed from Sydney on Jan 12, 1841 with endorsement in manuscript and struck with superb oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / SYDNEY" in red (Jan 13). Manuscript '3d.' outgoing Ship Fee in red ink and '8d.' in manuscript for incoming Ship Letter charged on arrival (June 3) in London. Reverse with "INDIA LETTER / PLYMOUTH" in black (Robertson IN4) and datestamp in red. 1849: Two envelopes addressed to Henry Condell, the first Mayor of Melbourne from 1842-1844, both with Postmaster's endorsement "Westbury" and dates of despatch. One endorsed "Paid Sea Postage 9d." with circular "LAUNCESTON" on reverse (Feb 4) in black and "SHIP LETTER / ♚ / MELBOURNE" in red (Feb 18) on reverse and rated '6d.'; the other "Paid Ship Letter 5d." in red ink, similarly cancelled on reverse, rated '3d.' for incoming Ship Letter in manuscript due. Imperfections but an unusual pair.rnNote: Henry Condell (1797-1871), first Mayor of Melbourne 1842-1844, was also the first member for Medlbourne to be elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council on 1 June 1843. He arrived in Tasmania in 1824, moving to Melbourne he made his fortune in brewing and was not averse to donating drinks to willing voters. Norfolk Island 1853: 4 d. orange, Plate II, coarse engraving, a used horizontal pair, slightly stained and one with pre-printing paper fold, boldly cancelled by "72" numeral obliterators of NORFOLK ISLAND in black, in use for less than a year. The Penal Settlement of Norfolk Island was administered from Hobart, its sole external Post Office. Supplies of stamps and numeral cancellation arrived 4 September 1854. The last of the convicts and military establishment were removed from Norfolk Island in May 1855, leaving it uninhabited except for the caretakers. Seven or eight items are known with the "72" numeral, this being the sole multiple - illustrated in "Norfolk Island" by Murray Brown (2012). 1861, 'Cancelled' Stamps for Rowland Hill’s Nephew Ormond Hill.rnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. (1998).rn1855: 2 d. green, imperforate, wmk. Large Star, good margins all round, just shaved at right, used with large part strikes of Perkins Bacon "CANCELLED" barred obliterator in black. Supplied by the printers Perkins Bacon to Ormond Hill (Rowland's nephew) in August 1861, six examples were supplied for members of the family, this being position 4 and unrecorded in the Peter Jaffe handbook. So far, just three of the six have surfaced, one being housed in the Collection of His Majesty King Charles III, this being somewhat finer than the King's example. Hellespont", tied by "60" numeral obliterator of Launceston. Framed "POST OFFICE / LAUNCESTON / ♚ / VDL" in red (Feb 6). London arrival cds on reverse (May 5) in red. The sole Tasmania cover recorded carried on the "Hellespont", which was a General Screw Coastal Steamer and was being sent to Singapore to be sold; where she arrived on March 16, the cover was taken on by the P&O (see Tabeart, 2nd Edition, page 168). Mail during the Crimean War is scarce due to ships being removed from the Australia route and charged with carrying soldiers and provisions to the Allied forces in the Crimea. Walch & Sons of Hobart under contract from the Post Office, straight edge at left and some minor creasing but a wonderful multiple of excellent colour and most attractive, large part or unmounted og. This block is illustrated on the dust-jacket of "Tasmania Stamps And Postal History" by W. Eugene Tinsley. Rare Gi = £ 1'950+.rnrnNote: From 1 October 1857, the Tasmania Post Office only supplied purchasers requiring five or more complete sheets of postage stamps. The public obtained their requirements, at face value, from licensed vendors who obtained their stocks at a discount from the GPO. From 1863 onwards, a number of stamp vendors applied their own roulettes or perforations to help with separation. The Hobart fiirm of Walch & Sons were particularly successful, leading to an official contract in July 1869 to perforate sheets for the Post Office. 1848 (Dec 28): Entire letter from Foster Fyans in Geelong to Melbourne, the third page of the letter being a "sketch of the sub-Division at Lonsdale", rated '4d.' for an internal Ship Letter in manuscript, backstamped on arrival with provisional datestamp "GEELONG / JANY 1 / 1849" of despatch - in use whilst the oval Geelong datestamp was having the year slug changed at the GPO in Melbourne. Geelong's Postmaster was unusual in creating an alternative temporary datestamp during the approximately two week annual change-over period.
