Cape of Good Hope Used in Basutoland 1896: Cape ½ s. on 1 d. brown postal stationery card up-rated with ½ grey-black (Gi 48a) used to Natal, tied by MASERU / BASUTOLAND cds (June 17) in black. GPO / Natal arrival cds (June 21) on reverse alongside interesting message - "Sir, Basutoland stamps are similar to those of Cape Colony, both in description and values" and signed by the Maseru Postmaster. Lambert in Lagos, Nigeria and each stamp neatly tied by MASERU circular datestamps (April 9, 1934) in black. An excessively rare piece: only 24 of the ½ d. value were issued, 54 of the 2 d. and 27 of the 6 d., the balance of the issue (numbering initially 300 sets) being burnt by the authorities. Lambert in Lagos, Nigeria neatly tied by MASERU circular datestamp (April 9, 1934) in black. An excessively rare cover: whilst the issue comprised of 300 of each of the four values, only 34 of the 1 d. value were actually issued, the balance being burnt by the authorities. Exceptional. Cert.
