    1843 (Sept 18): Entire letter written from Bathurst to Swords, Dublin, Ireland with interesting content written by Gambia's Military commander Major F.N. Cobbe, regarding life in the Gambia, the threat of fever and his possible appointment as the next Lieutenant Governor, struck in transit with fine "DEAL / SHIP LETTER" in black (Robertson S8). Rated '8' pence due in manuscript for an incoming Ship Letter, reverse with London cds (Nov 7) and Dublin arrival (Nov 8) both in red.

    1859: Prepaid cover from Bathurst to Nassau, Bahamas mailed with superb strike of "BATHURST / PAID / AU 25 / 1859 / GAMBIA" circular datestamp in red on reverse; carred by "S.S. Ethiopie" via Liverpool and London with "London / Paid" cds (Sept 15) in red on obverse and "11" pence in manuscript paid (10 d. per ½ ounce due to London, 1 d. for local charge). The envelope with slight edge wer and torn on front panel but of considerable rarity.

    1862: Great Britain 4 d. vermilion, hairlines (Gi 81), two defective examples used on 1864 cover addressed to Bathurst, South Africa tied by "401" numeral obliterators of Ilminster. The postal clerk saw Bathurst in the address and the cover was directed to the Gambia with two strikes (one on reverse) of the sole examples known of "MISSENT TO / GAMBIA" in black. Reverse with part flap missing but also showing double arc "SIERRA LEONE" cds in black (Dec 11) and then sent back to England with "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" in red (10 Jan 1865) and forwarded to Cape of Good Hope with Port Elizabeth cds (March 8), oval "GRAHAMS TOWN" and part BATHURST oval datestamps in black where presumably safely delivered. Despite faults, a rare and unique cover.

    1866: Stampless cover from Bathurst to Hull, Yorkshire rated "5" pence in red manuscript ink as credit to GB, struck with fine oxidised "BATHURST / PAID / JA 24 / 1866 / GAMBIA" datestamp in red. Hull arrival cds (Feb 8) on reverse. Previously sold (ex collection John Sacher) as the "only known" example of this rare datestamp in black, a description which this describer would contest. Envelope soiled but nevertheless rare.rnrn

    1879: Prepaid cover from the Gambia to Basel, Switzerland endorsed "via Liverpool" with manuscript "3" in red at top being the amount due to Great Britain from the 4 d. rate. "GAMBIA / PAID" despatch cds (Nov 12) and "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" cds in red (Dec 1). Whilst both the Gambian and Liverpool Postz Offices marked the cover 'paid' the Swiss charged due on arrival in Basel with "65" rappen in red manuscript and taxed the cover with Swiss Postage Due 5 c., 10 c. and 50 c. blue tied by Basel cds's (Dec 3). Rare and most unsuual, ex collection John Sacher.

    1886/93: 1 d. aniline crimson, a single example used on slightly soiled 1896 cover addressed to the United States Consul in Gorée, Sénégal, tied by "Bathurst / Gambia" cds in black (Dec 21). Reverse with flap tucked in and unsealed (probabe Christmas / New Year card) and "Senegal / Goree" arrival cds (Jan 3, 1897). An unusual usage.

Reverse with Marseille transit (Dec 13) and New York and Richmond (Dec 23) datestamps. Pinholes to envelope at upper left but scarce.

    1935: Silver Jubilee 1½ d. deep blue & scarlet, a used example on 1935 cover to a passenger on ship "M.V.Apapa" due at Bathurst, tied by "T.P.O. No. 2 / RIVER GAMBIA" cds (July 20). Struck with Shipping Company arrival (July 23) in violet and five strikes of "SHIP SAILED" and deleted "TOO LATE" in black, replaced by two strikes of "Return to senders" in black. Bathurst cds (July 31) at upper left. A most unusual cover.
