    1839: Printed Matter entire letter written in German to London, endorsed "pr. Alert Pkt.", struck on despatch by fine "RIO-JANEIRO" double arc despatch cds (May 21) in black (early usage, known from January only). Reverse with London arrival (July 22) and manuscript notation "Only Double, Fredk. Huth & Co." and the rate changed from "10/6d." due to pay to a prepaid "7/-" in red manuscript. Scarce.

    1847 (May 8): Entire letter, with superb engraving of the Hotel Pharoux on the waterfront at Rio, mailed from Rio de Janeiro to Everton Village, Liverpool endorsed "pr. Antelope", with interesting contents concerning same: "The Antelope screw steamer arrived here on 25th April in 27 days from Liverpool, the shortest passage on record", and struck on obverse with "COVE / SHIP LETTER" in blue (Robertson fig. S2) with CORK cds on reverse (June 17) and handstruck "8" (pence) for Ship Letter rate in black. A delightful entire.

    1851 (April 10): Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Oporto endorsed "p. Medway", struck with fine "♚ / PAID AT / RIO DE JANEIRO" in black and carried at double rate with manuscript "2/-" in red. Reverse with poor double arc "RIO-JANEIRO" cds in black. Struck with framed "P. BRIT" in blue on arrival and handstruck "540 + manuscript 80 = 620 reis" due to pay, the 80 reis due for the Lisbon - Porto leg of the journey. Disinfected by two chisel slits, a fine and most appealing entire Gi CC3 = £ 850.

    1862 (Dec. 20): Cover from Altona, Hamburg to Santos, Brazil endorsed "via Bordeaux pr. Steamer", with sender's cachet in blue and oval "Hamburg" datestamp (Dec. 21). Struck in transit with "T.T. 38" in black (Van der Linden fig. 2848) and thence via Erquelines and Paris where struck with "F / 21" Convention marking (Van der Linden fig. 1142) in black. "Correio Geral Da Corte" cds of receipt (16 Jan. 1863) on front in black and initially rated with framed "280" reis but deleted and struck with framed "430" reis handstamp both in red.     1843/1940: Strong, predominantly used, classic and semi-classic collection up to WWII in seven self-designed Albums, containing many excellent quality classic stamps and covers. The collection commences with an array of nine pre-philatelic letters, including two interlopers originating from BUENOS AYRES, including one via the British Office both to EUROPE. The collection contains thirteen BULLS-EYE stamps including five early impressions, and over 70 copies of the subsequent "INCLINADOS" issue, including the key value 600 R. The 1849 "VERTICAIS" issue takes up 15 pages in the first album, here including 10 copies of the 600 R. The 1854 "COLORIDOS" come with seven copies of the 430 R including one large margin unused specimen. The 1866 perforated issues are also well represented. The 1866 "Emperor Pedro II" section contains four unused 500 R orange-yellow all no gum, the subsequent rouletted stamps are again strongly represented with eight 700 R reddish-brown and eighteen 1000 R grey.  Later issues are similarly strong, with more and more very attractive letters and covers, to name an example a 200 R lettercard from 1883 used as registered correspondence from MACEIO to CONSTANTINOPLE. Post revolution issues continue in the same vein, each representited in significant nubers. Post 1900 the collector added more unused items, with onset of the 1930s airmail letters becomeing more prominent, imcluding six of Zeppelin return flights and some other airmail. A thouroughly enjoyable lot to study and enlarge.
